Women with their children after leaving their homes to find safety, food and clean water. Most of their husbands stayed behind to protect their homes. They are surviving largely by eating the bulbs from water lilies and occasionally fish from the swamp. They collect the bulbs, then peel, boil and ground them into a paste, which is very time consuming. Photo: Corrie Sissons/Oxfam

We must intervene now, before more lives are lost.

According to the UN, millions of families are facing starvation as famine looms in Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria, and is already devastating parts of South Sudan.

During the 2011 Somalia famine, 260,000 people died, half of them children under the age of five. According to our experts, it looks like the crisis unfolding now will be worse unless we act urgently.

It will only take a couple of minutes to make your call and you will help secure much needed funds to help families facing starvation today.

Here’s what you can say once you’re connected:

"Hello, I’m your constituent in (your city/state) and I’m calling to urge you to support an additional appropriation of $1 billion for famine prevention and relief this 2017 fiscal year. We need to get money to the frontlines now to save lives while we still can. Thank you for your time.

Feel free to add in some detail about why you care about fighting famine.

We cannot stand by and allow people to die of hunger in a world of plenty. Thank you so much for doing your part to urge Congress to mobilize to fight famine now."
