Oxfam Urges President-Elect Donald Trump to Take On Fight Against Global Poverty

By

Upon the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States of America, Oxfam America President, Raymond C. Offenheiser, made the following statement:

“We call on President-elect Trump to continue the US leadership role in the fight against poverty around the world, and not backtrack on the progress we have made.

“Now that election politics are over, Oxfam urges President-elect Trump to work to bring about real solutions to global crises. We urge President-elect Trump to lead a strong American response to the humanitarian emergencies that have forced more than 60 million people from their homes, many of them women, and threatened the survival of many millions more. The US must also step up diplomatic efforts to resolve crises in Syria and Yemen and welcome more refugees and people fleeing violence.

“We hope President-elect Trump will reconsider his stance against refugees who are seeking safety in America as their last resort. Now is a time for solidarity and compassion, not a time to close our minds, our hearts, or our borders.

“It is also essential that the President-elect recognizes that climate change is a real global threat that demands solutions. The US must uphold our international obligations to address climate change and sustain constructive United States engagement in international negotiations and processes. Fighting global climate change simply cannot happen without the United States.

“We hope to work with President-elect Trump and his administration to help improve the plight of millions of people who suffer from hunger, violence and injustice around the world.”
