In response to media reports that the Biden administration will continue to expel refugee families under Title 42, Oxfam America's Global Policy Lead Noah Gottschalk said:
"Every single day that this inhumane policy stays in place is a day that our government is illegally forcing refugee families back into harm's way. President Biden has adopted this shameful Trump-era policy as his own, and he is equally responsible for its tragic human consequences.
“President Biden has said time and again that his administration would be guided by science, yet medical experts have consistently rejected the idea that Title 42 is necessary to protect public health. Vaccines are readily available and effective against new variants of COVID. The country is opening back up, so too should our borders be open for people seeking asylum.
"The Biden administration promised to implement humane immigration policies, but it is instead bowing to political pressure to continue the Trump administration's inhumane and illegal practice of sending refugees back to the very places they are fleeing, exposing them to grave danger and threats to their lives.
"The Biden administration must end the illegal and immoral Title 42 policy in its entirety. Welcoming people fleeing for their lives isn't just the right thing to do, it's the law."
