Oxfam reaction to presidential determination on refugees for FY23

By

In response to President Biden announcing a refugee resettlement goal of 125,00 for fiscal year 2023, Abby Maxman, President and CEO of Oxfam America, made the following statement:

“The Biden administration must take a more vigorous and forthright approach to welcoming all refugees coming to the US in search of safety. As forced displacement continues to increase at a rapid pace around the world, the US cannot simply set a goal and not exhaust every avenue to meet it. Our country must be at the forefront of ensuring that all who seek safety here are given the support and permanent status needed for immediate protection.”

“While the presidential determination is one tool for the US to use to uphold its global responsibility, the Biden administration must also seek thoughtful and adequate long-term solutions to meet refugee resettlement needs globally.”

“The wealthiest nation on Earth has a moral obligation to lead in these efforts and live up to its promise as a welcoming nation for the most vulnerable among us. The US must act with a sense of urgency and meet the needs of the moment.”
