G20 countries should oppose ‘geopolitical bullying’ and refuse to participate in US-led G20 until South Africa invited, says Oxfam

By

In response to the State Department’s announcement that the United States will not extend an invitation to the South African government to participate in the 2026 G20, Rebecca Riddell, senior policy lead for economic justice at Oxfam America, said:

“We're witnessing a clear case of geopolitical bullying by the U.S., this time against South Africa. The United States' baseless accusations and abuse of power threaten to delegitimize its G20 presidency.

“As the U.S. assumes the G20 presidency, it’s putting forward an agenda that is likely to worsen inequality worldwide. It is no surprise that the U.S. is pushing to undermine South Africa’s voice at one of the most important global economic forums and picking fights with nations that oppose global inequality.

“Other G20 countries should oppose U.S. strong-arming and refuse to participate in the U.S.-led G20 until South Africa is invited. It is the right thing to do – and if they don't take a stand now, they could well be next.”
