Oxfam's Women’s Rights and Accountabily Initiative

Advancing gender justice in natural resource governance

This document traces the evolution of gender integration within the extractive industries and natural resource justice agendas. It chronicles Oxfam’s Women’s Rights and Extractive Industries Accountability Initiative, funded by the Hewlett Foundation. The project supported the active participation of women and their representative organizations in decision making around the use of revenues generated by extractive industries, namely mining. The following account highlights key project achievements.

From 2017-2024, Oxfam and the Working Group on Gender Justice and Extractive Industries worked tirelessly to integrate gender policies and practices into the natural resource governance sector. Originally formed by Oxfam, Publish What You Pay International, and the Natural Resource Governance Institute, the Working Group leveraged strategic collaborations, innovative research, strong community support, and carefully crafted advocacy to successfully champion gender equity in a sector historically bereft of gender awareness.
