Oxfam and coalition partners set sail on a campaign to preserve vital safety net programs.
Oxfam is embarking on a tour of the U.S. with our inflatable billionaire yacht to spread the word about billionaire tax cuts that come at the cost of ordinary people.
While people across the country are struggling to make ends meet, the Trump-Musk administration is pushing for massive tax giveaways to the ultra-rich few and mega-corporations. At the same time, the administration and some lawmakers in Congress are pushing to slash vital programs—like childcare, education, food assistance, and healthcare—that benefit everyone.
It's all smooth sailing for the ultra-rich while the rest of us are left out at sea: that’s the future we’re headed for if the tax law from Trump’s first term—the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA)—is renewed. This is the cornerstone of a pro-billionaire agenda that's ultimately designed to redistribute power and wealth upwards.
Oxfam believes that a fairer tax code, one that reduces inequality is still possible to achieve. Now is the time to right the ship and fix our broken tax system—to win power back from the billionaire class and create an economy that works for all of us. That’s why Oxfam is sending out a distress call to Congress to reject a rigged tax code and invest in essential programs that benefit everyone.
If Congress allows the TCJA’s tax breaks for ultra-wealthy individuals and corporations to expire, that will result in more than $3.7 trillion in revenue. Putting that money toward investments in education, health care, and infrastructure would ensure that we all stay afloat.
The yacht has made a splash at rallies and cultural events across the country, illustrating how setting up the tax code to reward the obscenely wealthy amounts to a ridiculous tax scam. These events are co-organized with our coalition of partners and concerned constituents dedicated to a more equal future.
Oxfam’s yacht made its first appearance at a tax rally in Augusta, Maine, on April 15. Oxfam was joined at the statehouse by Mainers for Tax Fairness, Indivisible, the Planned Parenthood of Maine Action Fund, and the Maine People’s Alliance. It next docked in Somerville, New Jersey, at the Don’t Let Our Future Sail Away—Fund Medicaid, Not the 1% rally. In New Jersey, we were joined by New Jersey Policy Perspective, NJ Citizen Action, and Indivisible.
We will continue to update our itinerary as the movement to tax the ultra-rich grows. Check back here to find out if the yacht is making a stop near you.
