In a world as rich as ours, it’s wrong that communities rich in natural resources often face poverty, corruption, human rights violations, and the worst effects of climate change. Oil, gas, and mining projects should not add to poverty, they should help communities overcome injustice, with communities deciding whether and how to develop their own resources.
Communities have the right to Natural Resource Justice – to control the future of their natural resources, fight poverty through sustainable development, and exercise their rights.
Oxfam’s Extractive Industries Global Program seeks to empower communities affected by oil, gas, and mining operations to know and defend their rights to secure a just outcome. We see a future where communities can control how to use their natural resources to reduce poverty.
Oxfam works in approximately 25 countries with communities affected by oil, gas, and mining projects. We’re here at the Publish What You Pay Africa Meeting and Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Global Conference to continue our fight for natural resource justice.
