Oxfam America statement in response to Trump administration sanctions on the International Criminal Court

By

In response to the Trump administration's sanctions on the International Criminal Court, Abby Maxman, President & CEO of Oxfam America, said:

“The US government’s sanctions against the International Criminal Court are an attack on independent justice and international accountability, and more broadly on a just multilateral system.

Undermining the Court’s ability to function deepens impunity and threatens access to justice for communities affected by grave violations of international law. The Court's independence and the safety of its staff must be protected from political interference and intimidation. We urge the United States to reverse these measures and call on governments, including the Netherlands as a host state and EU member states, to take concrete steps, particularly by invoking the blocking statue, to protect the Court and ensure it can carry out its mandate independently.

International law, including international criminal law, is the shared rulebook that protects people, checks power, and enables people and communities to find justice through rights rather than force and conflict. States must use all their powers to resist this system of impunity by which powerful states can impose their views on the rest of the world.”
