Oxfam statement on Ebola Recovery Conference outcome

By

In response to the pledges made today at the UN’s Ebola Recovery Conference, Oxfam’s Director of Aid Effectiveness Gregory Adams said:

“Oxfam welcomes the generous pledges that were made today during the UN’s Ebola Recovery Conference. The governments of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea requested $3.2 billion to meet their total country recovery plan budgets, and today that request was met, with over $3.2 billion promised.

“It is now the donors’ and recipient governments’ responsibility to ensure that the promised funds are delivered in the most transparent and useful way. Donors need to support the governments and people of the three affected countries to lead their own recovery. Communities need to be at the heart of the recovery process in both its planning and implementation. Citizens must be able to follow the flow of this money from donors to their governments in order to hold them accountable, give feedback and demand real results.

“Progress has been made through investments in community health workers and mobilizing communities to control the Ebola epidemic, but there is a long road ahead. If donors, governments and local people work together, we can beat Ebola now, reduce the risks posed by other diseases and prevent public health emergencies in the future.”
