 “Strengthening connections between communities and local government”

An article in the UN ISDR publication “Local governments and disaster risk reduction: good practices and lessons learned” about how Oxfam and a consortium of NGOs and donors in El Salvador are helping government authorities fulfill their obligations both to respond to emergencies and to help communities reduce disaster risks. The article also describes how Oxfam and partners are helping strengthen local civil-protection committees to become first responders in emergencies, and improving coordination among all actors in disaster response.

A case study in the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Task Force for Climate Change publication “Addressing the humanitarian challenges of climate change” about the work of Oxfam and local partner Asociación Proyección in response to a severe cold snap in 2004 that killed more than 8,000 llamas and alpacas. The article also discusses the agencies’ continuing efforts to improve the resilience of herding communities as they face changing rainfall patterns and a future of climate change.
