Gender justice in disaster response

Tsunami research brief: An examination of good practices and challenges for aid providers in promoting gender equity in India during and after the tsunami.

Gender mainstreaming - assessing the implications of any action on woman and men - is a well-developed concept among aid providers. Despite this, many of the recovery efforts that followed the first 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami fell short of specific measures to address the needs of people marginalized by gender and, as a result, often perpetuated pre-disaster inequalities. Oxfam joined with researchers from Anawim Trust in Tamil Nadu, India, to examine the good practices and challenges as NGOs tried to implement equitable disaster relief and rehabilitation programs.
