Oxfam reaction to Supreme Court ruling on ‘Remain in Mexico’

By

In response to today’s Supreme Court decision that the Biden administration has the authority to terminate the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, Global Policy Lead Noah Gottschalk said the following:

“Today, thousands of refugee families and people seeking protection in the US can begin to breathe a little easier.

“The decision today by the Supreme Court represents an all-too-rare victory for basic human rights. Beneath the procedural back-and-forth is the central truth that there is no safe or humane way to send asylum seekers back into danger. This immoral Trump-era policy created a humanitarian catastrophe and caused immeasurable harm to people in search of safety.

“While this decision is an important step toward ending the shameful 'Remain in Mexico’ policy, the fight continues. We, along with our partners and allies, will not stop advocating for asylum seekers and for the end all harmful immigration policies, like Title 42, so that all are able to find safety here.”
