Oxfam reaction to House of Representatives passing tax bill

By

In response to the passage of the tax bill in the House of Representatives Gawain Kripke, Oxfam America’s Policy Director, made the following statement:

“This is a cruel bill. It deserves to go down in flames. Yet today it is one step closer to becoming law.

“This bill shows how far we are from our founder’s vision of a "commonwealth" shared by all.  The House is enacting a vision of an unequal, divided state with the super-rich and tax-free global corporations at the top, and everyone else below. The Senate should reject this brutish course.”

“With this vote, poor and middle class voters have a crystal clear record of who is protecting them in Washington. Representatives who voted to pass this bonanza for the rich and powerful chose to take more from poor and middle class people and give it to big companies and the wealthy.

“This tax bill represents one of the clearest threats to inclusive economic growth Congress has considered in decades. Its passage puts millions of lives in the balance."
