In response to President Trump’s determination of an emergency in order to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Oxfam America’s Humanitarian Policy Lead, Scott Paul, made the following statement:

By

“The Trump Administration is manufacturing an emergency to push through the sale of deadly weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The real emergency is the 12 million people at risk of famine in Yemen and the largest-ever recorded cholera outbreak continues to spread because of the conflict, but this administration shows little concern for the millions who suffer. Yemenis will continue to pay the price of the US’s indefinite and unconditional support of one side in their country’s horrific war.

“Once again, the Trump administration is demonstrating that it values profit and its Gulf allies over resolving the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress have demanded that the US ends its support for the war in Yemen, but the President charging ahead with the indefensible sale of weapons that fuel the conflict. Congress must immediately suspend the sale and transfer of any weapons that will deepen Yemen’s crisis, and ensure President Trump has no loopholes left to abuse.”
