Teens Race To Beat Hunger

9 May 2005

Students deliver food baskets to the elderly to help raise hunger awareness in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Great Vegetable Run may sound like a 10K race gone awry, but it’s really a combination hunger awareness campaign and food drive for the elderly in Birmingham, Alabama.

YouthServe, a community service organization for high school students, has organized the program for the past three years.

“All of the food we deliver is donated by local grocery stores,” said Megann Bates, the Birmingham YouthService Corps Program Director.  “This year, as part of the Global Week of Action, we made sure that fair trade and organic produce was part of the mix.”

On April 16th, over 100 students delivered 300 baskets of bananas, apples, onions, potatoes, and carrots to Birmingham area elderly and shut-ins.  Many dressed in their Sunday best to greet their young friends, who stayed for a short visit at each home.

“In 2003, we started with 60 baskets,” said Bates.  “For 2006, we’ve already set a goal of 500 baskets.  We’re definitely growing!”

The YouthServe students also mailed over 100 “Make Trade Fair” postcards to their state representatives as part of the week’s activities.
