Fair Trade Gets Fashionable

11 May 2005

Trinity College students organize fashion show to raise money for Fair Trade.

Not even a blackout could prevent the Global Week of Action from starting off with a fashionable bang.

To kickoff the week at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, the Amnesty Group held a Fair Trade fashion show.

“The only thing we spent money on was the lighting,” said Lindsey Moore, the event organizer and co-president of Amnesty Group.

But five minutes into the event, the lights went dark.  A city-wide blackout that lasted almost three hours had hit Hartford.

“The audience stuck with us in the darkness, and everyone pitched in to help,” said Moore.  “Some fraternity brothers used flashlights to illuminate the stage, and the band performed acoustic music.”

Fair Trade designers such as Designs from the Monte, Marketplace India and Cotton Field USA donated clothes for the event, and Trinity College students from the Greek community, campus organizations, and sports teams were the models.

After the show, the clothing was auctioned off to raise money to benefit Fair Trade.

“Raising awareness of Fair Trade products was the goal,” said Moore.  “It turned out to be a unifying event for the campus as well.”
