Shopping For Fair Trade

9 May 2005

Bazaar in Waltham, Massachusetts raises money for the elderly in Boston and the needy in Guatemala, India and Nepal.

From the outside, the Fair Trade Sale & Bazaar looked like a simple yard sale. But those who stopped to shop found much more -- a wealth of Fair Trade products and information.

The Waltham, Massachusetts, event was sponsored by online Fair Trade market It’s Only Fairas part of the Global Week of Action.

“My fiancé and I taught English in Japan and were amazed at how huge Fair Trade was internationally,” said Helene Edelstein, co-founder of It’s Only Fair.  “Our goal is to raise awareness of the issue through the sale of fairly-traded, organic, and socially responsible products.”

Shoppers visiting the bazaar at the First Parish, Unitarian Universalist Church chose from chocolates, jewelry, incense, candles, soaps, clothing, and home accessories.  They also tasted free samples of Fair Trade coffees and organic teas.

“The bazaar was a great way to spread the word and meet people,” said Edelstein.  “Activists from other towns who came invited us to hold our bazaar at their area events.”

Proceeds from the event went to the Hale Barnard Services for Older People in Boston and economically disadvantaged communities from Guatemala, India, and Nepal.
