Oxfam America

Global Reach

Oxfam America is able to work on the ground in more than 30 countries. But being part of the global Oxfam International family—a confederation of 13 Oxfams—expands our reach to more than 120 countries.

While the 13 Oxfam affiliates maintain autonomous operations, we come together frequently to leverage the strength of our global Oxfam family.

Emergencies

In order to respond with signature Oxfam speed and effectiveness, Oxfam's emergency response is integrated across all Oxfam affiliates. Where one is able to provide on-the-ground water engineers, another manages the logistics for trucking in emergency supplies. Still other Oxfams lobby for a broader international response and raise funds to support the combined Oxfam effort.

Campaigns

Together, Oxfam affiliates push for change in international policies and laws that keep people in poverty. Affiliates also work to educate and mobilize the international public.

Case-in-point: Make Trade Fair

Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign has mobilized millions of people to sign the Big Noise petition and to express their outrage at the injustices of the world trade system.

Regional Initiatives

Where several Oxfams may be working in a single region, Oxfam affiliates frequently coordinate funds and efforts to achieve the greatest impact.

Case-in-point: BHP-Billiton Corporation

Tintaya Marquiri was one of five indigenous communities in Peru adversely affected by a copper mine owned by BHP-Billiton Corporation. To help communities defend themselves, Oxfam America trained 200 community members in negotiations and environmental monitoring. Meanwhile, Oxfam’s affiliate in Australia, Oxfam Community Aid Abroad, visited BHP-Billiton’s world headquarters in Australia and garnered a corporate commitment to negotiate with communities.
