Change starts with you.
Concerned citizens like you have encouraged elected officials to try to end poverty and social injustice. Through Oxfam America's eAdvocacy campaigns, our online supporters have sent e-mails that have helped save lives, protect sacred lands, and set the stage for important legislative work. Joining our eCommunity means you too can make a contribution to this very important work.
Look at some of our successes:
- In 2005, Oxfam's eCommunity members encouraged congressional leaders to withdraw the Pombo Mining Amendment, which would have allowed the sale of public lands and opened up areas for mining without consulting local Native American communities.
- After an appeal from our eCommunity and many hours of behind-the-scenes negotiations, President Bush announced in 2003 that US troops would deploy off the coast of Liberia. Their mission: to support West African peacekeepers and allow aid workers to reach people in need. Fast forward to today: a now calm Liberia has just democratically chosen a new president -– the first woman president ever elected in Africa.
- Since 2004, Oxfam's eCommunity members have contacted their Congressional representatives, senators, and the White House to call for a major reform of US farm subsidies which harm farmers here and abroad. By supporting specific legislation or amendments in federal and agency budgets, our online community used its power to ask that elected officials cap farm subsidies, which lead to overproduction and dumping on the world market. The result is hunger and poverty for farmers who just want to earn a living and feed their families.
Oxfam will continue to build on this momentum in 2008.
