Primary responsibilities
We are seeking an enthusiastic Climate Change Legislative Intern to work closely with its Campaigns and Policy Team based in Washington, DC. The intern will support advocacy efforts for Oxfam’s Climate Change Campaign. This is an unpaid internship and will be between 20-40 hours per week, depending on availability. It can begin immediately and go through December. The intern will assist in developing and implementing the lobbying strategy for Oxfam’s Climate Change Campaign (see www.oxfamamerica.org/climate for more details about the campaign).
This internship provides a unique opportunity to support Oxfam America’s Washington DC policy office and gain experience in advocacy, research, lobbying and issue-based campaigning. The role of the intern will be to provide administrative assistance for the legislative and policy team, as well as research and writing on issues related to government affairs and climate change.
Responsibilities:
- Research congressional targets and assist in developing lobbying tools and strategies;
- Attend coalition meetings, events, discussions, and congressional hearings, as needed
- Track and analyze federal legislation related to Oxfam initiatives
- Research additional topics as needed
- Assist with data collection and reporting using Congress Plus
- Participate in Government Affairs team meetings
- Participate in Oxfam staff meetings
- Participate, as appropriate, in coalition meetings and events
Qualifications
Ideal applicants should have an interest in government and legislative issues, climate change, and progressive and humanitarian concerns. Background in US politics or Hill experience a plus. Candidates must have strong writing and communication skills, exacting attention to detail, ability to juggle multiple tasks at once, motivated to work independently, strong organizational skills, professionalism and ability to meet deadlines, interest in furthering knowledge about Oxfam, global climate issues, and social justice, and a high level of personal energy and commitment.
