Emile Hirsch
Inspired to learn about Oxfam while studying for the lead role in the 2007 film “Into the Wild,” actor Emile Hirsch has travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe to see firsthand Oxfam’s humanitarian response in these regions.
Actor Emile Hirsch first learned about Oxfam when he played the main character, Chris McCandless, in the 2007 film “Into the Wild.” In the film, McCandless donates his life’s savings to Oxfam and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
Hirsch was inspired to learn about the organization while studying for the part; in 2008, he traveled with Oxfam to the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has seen one of the most deadly conflicts since World War II. Hirsch was featured on the cover of the January 2009 Men’s Journal, which published his trip diary.
In 2009, Hirsch traveled to Zimbabwe to see Oxfam’s response to the cholera crisis there. He wrote about his experience on the Huffington Post.
