Acting fast to Save Lives and Rebuild Communities

Goal: $7 million

Oxfam is a world leader in disaster response in developing countries. We swiftly supply clean water and training in hygienic practices to prevent the spread of diseases. But that’s just part of what we do.

Long after the short-term crisis, we continue the more complex work of helping people rebuild their communities and their livelihoods—and we work with them to prepare better for the next crisis. By helping people plan for natural or man-made disasters, they will suffer fewer losses and recover more quickly. Reducing the risks limits the devastation.

If global warming continues, it’s the world’s poorest people who stand to suffer the harshest impacts from the droughts, hurricanes, and flooding that will follow. Here is what we are doing to help them:

  • Creating an urgent action fund so staffers can be deployed immediately when emergency strikes
  • Establishing community disaster plans and training
  • Developing long-term plans to help communities hit by disasters restore their livelihoods
