Aftermath of Hurricane Gustav

On September 1, 2008, Hurricane Gustav made landfall in south central Louisiana. While the city of New Orleans and its surrounding parishes were spared heavy damage, many of the rural, impoverished or marginal districts in the southern areas and coastlines of Louisiana suffered flooding and significant wind damage. Many residents had barely rebuilt following the catastrophic devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Oxfam America and our partners in the region are responding to ensure that those already at-risk receive the additional support they need to recover from Gustav and prepare for additional storms as the 2008 hurricane season continues. Our ongoing work to rebuild the region following the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina proceeds, as well.
