Black Mesa Trust (BMT) is a grassroots organization formed on the Hopi Indian reservation to address the rapid depletion of their aquifer—their only source of water for consumption and farming. The annual withdrawal of more than a billion gallons of water for coal mining operations is drying up water sources that Hopi and Navajo Indians have relied on for millennia. Black Mesa Trust is organizing outreach and mobilization efforts and also collaborating with environmental and legal defense organizations to bring public visibility to this urgent situation.
