What Oxfam is Doing
|
ENHANCING FOOD AND INCOME SECURITY
While some areas of the Mekong have seen major decreases in poverty, others still struggle to secure basic food and income. Where livelihoods are threatened, Oxfam helps people:
- Diversify and find new and multiple sources of income, so that households have a broader income base. Oxfam partners are helping families build skills in backyard aquaculture, organic vegetable gardening, and rice farming, and other small businesses.
- Increase their access to markets. When organized communities produce better quality and higher value-added products, they can bargain for better prices and even take advantage of domestic and international fair trade initiatives.
Integrated Programming
Often, food and income security are closely connected with resources: when fish stocks are threatened, fishers struggle to put food on the table, let alone sell their catch for profit. Oxfam's efforts to build food security are closed tied to our endeavors to strengthen community access to natural resources.
