Local Partnerships

Oxfam collaborates with local organizations to help people identify and address the root causes of poverty. Today, we maintain relationships with more than 250 partners on the ground; these strategic alliances are the key to our success.

Oxfam's work with local partners brings together:

Local Know-How

Communities often have a clearer idea of what could help them overcome their problems, but lack the resources to make it happen. When empowered to take ownership of a problem, they create solutions that last.

Global Strength and Experience

Oxfam provides funding, training, and support to get solutions started. With our decades of development experience, we offer tested ideas of what has worked for other people in similar situations. Our position in the international community also enables us to tap into institutional and governmental players that communities may need to realize change.

Case-in-Point: local know-how yields results

When Oxfam first visited Yunnan, China, to explore the effects of a dam, we did not anticipate meeting Dr. Yu Xiao Gang, a local academic looking for a way to address the mounting watershed issues in his community. Oxfam provided Dr. Yu with funding and coaching to help him start Green Watershed, a pioneering environment organization in China. With Oxfam’s support, Green Watershed has influenced the Chinese government to delay dam construction until environmental impacts can be further assessed.

More Than a Funder

"We think it's important people realize that Oxfam is in this as a funder. But more than just giving money, it's actually supporting us in a variety of ways."
Laura Germino, Co-founder of Oxfam partner the Coalition of Immokalee Workers
