Darfur: The Facts About People

Now in its fifth year, the crisis in Darfur has snared millions of people.

It has been more than four years since the crisis in Darfur erupted in early 2003. The numbers of people forced from their homes continues to climb. Since January, ongoing violence has displaced nearly 250,000 people—some for the second and third times. Here are the facts.

  • More than 4.5 million people in Darfur and eastern Chad now rely on humanitarian aid.
  • The violence has forced 2.5 million people from their homes. That’s around one-third of the entire population of Darfur.
  • More than 2 million villagers are now living in camps for displaced people inside Darfur.
  • 250,000 others have crossed the border into Chad where they are living in refugee camps.
  • 170,000 Chadians have also fled their homes as the violence from Darfur has spilled into their country.

When more families fled their villages and arrived last year at the Al Salaam camp in North Darfur, they rested on the outskirts of the settlement. Many of the displaced people already living in the camp brought some of their food rations to share with these new arrivals.
