For the most part, the town of Abbeville, LA, remained dry when Hurricane Katrina pushed Gulf waters several miles inland. But one neighborhood bordering on a bayou was thoroughly soaked when water breached the bank and the pump failed that was supposed to keep things dry.

The Davenport family’s house was heavily damaged, mostly by the several feet of contaminated water that sat in their home for five days. Volunteers from the Southern Mutual Help Association and Mennonite Disaster Service gutted the structure and rebuilt much of it, but the building is not yet complete.

Nathaniel and Serenity Davenport and their three children still live in a cramped FEMA trailer parked next to their house. The tight quarters have been stressful, and all are eager to move back into their home.
