When disaster strikes, there's no time to lose
In the wake of a major disaster, lives depend on reaching survivors with aid in the very first hours and days. First we do an assessment and draw up a plan of action. Then we swiftly deploy staff, equipment, and supplies to the field.
The Global Emergencies Fund helps ensure that Oxfam can carry out the critical first phase of any disaster response without pausing to raise money.
Beyond the media spotlight
Many serious humanitarian disasters barely cause a ripple in the major media. Some take place off the beaten path of most journalists. Others, like food crises, begin quietly and aren't considered news stories until they become full-blown disasters-too late to prevent tragic outcomes. Some splash across the front pages for a few days and then disappear from the news long before the crisis is resolved.
The Global Emergencies Fund ensures that we can respond where we're needed most, without relying on headline news to generate public interest and support.
Reducing the risk of disaster
Oxfam has programs around the world aimed at making communities less vulnerable to future disasters. We are improving water sources in areas prone to devastating droughts; helping communities store seeds and food to avert food shortages; and providing preparedness trainings to help villagers take charge and save lives at times of emergency.
The Global Emergencies Fund will support some of our proactive work to help communities prepare for emergencies and reduce the risk of future disasters.
