Cheka kidogo means “laugh a little” in Swahili.

Surprisingly, people still are. Even though they’re living in the midst of one of world’s deadliest civil wars, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Since 1998, the conflict has already claimed the lives of five million people, and left more than one million homeless.

Recently, world-renowned portrait photographer Rankin traveled with Oxfam to meet displaced people who have taken refuge in Mugunga camp, Goma, DRC. Now part of a public exhibition on London’s South Bank, Rankin’s striking photographs capture the survivors’ bravery, strength, and determination—and their longing for peace.
