Questions and Answers about the Myanmar Cyclone
Posted: 16 May 2008
How many people have been affected by the Myanmar cyclone?
The Associated Press is reporting that more than 120,000 people may have died as a consequence of the devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar's delta region early Saturday, May 3. The United Nations estimates that 2.5 million people are now in urgent need of aid. About 24 million people live in areas of Myanmar affected by the storm. Reliable information is difficult to obtain at this stage of an emergency and these figures are preliminary.
How many aid workers does Oxfam have working in Myanmar?
OOxfam currently does not run operational programs in Myanmar. With a mixture of relief supplies, technical expertise, and equipment, we will be responding to the crisis through a handful of partner organizations. For instance, one of our partners is now providing rice to people assembled in spontaneous camps and is readying supplies of medicine, water purifiers, and instant noodles for shipment. It is also providing rescue boats to bring stranded people in remote areas to safety. Elsewhere, partners have been helping survivors by distributing basic household goods including blankets and soap as well as personal items and clothing.
We are also providing funds to other international aid groups already established within Myanmar, and we have a team of four public health engineers on standby in Bangkok. Additionally, we are exploring other options for offering assistance including assigning our staff members to work with United Nations agencies.
What are some of the challenges the international community faces in responding to this humanitarian emergency?
The aid effort faces huge challenges. Communications have been down in the cyclone-hit areas, roads have been washed away, and getting aid to people is very difficult.
How does this disaster compare with other recent disasters such as the Indian Ocean tsunami and Pakistan earthquake?
It's too early to know. But the relief phase of the operation is likely to take at least six months followed by a lengthy rebuilding phase.
How long will the aid effort last?
Some aid is already getting through but nowhere near enough. Much more needs to be done.
How long will it take for aid to get through?
Some aid is already getting through but nowhere near enough. Much more needs to be done.
What are the most urgent humanitarian needs?
Right now the aid effort is focused on saving lives. There is an urgent need to provide affected people with clean water for drinking, cooking and washing. There’s also a need for temporary shelter, such as plastic sheeting and tarpaulins, as well as food.
Can I donate goods to Oxfam such as blankets and medical equipment?
Oxfam does not accept goods. Transporting goods is very expensive and time consuming. Where possible, Oxfam and its partners purchase relief items locally to keep costs low as well as to help stimulate the local economy.
