Indian Ocean Tsunami

The toll of the December 2004 tsunami was vast. When the waves receded, more than 230,000 people were dead or missing. Houses were demolished, and fields and paddies were submerged in saltwater. In some cases, entire communities and the land they stood on disappeared into the ocean. Oxfam and our partner organizations in the region have assisted 2.3 million survivors with aid that includes clean water, sanitation, shelter, and funding and training for small businesses. At every step of the recovery we are looking for--and finding--opportunities to help survivors make sustainable improvements to their lives and livelihoods.
