FAIR TRADE COFFEE MILESTONES


  • In the US, students at more than 350 colleges and universities are campaigning to bring Fair Trade Certified™ coffee to their campuses through United Students for Fair Trade.
  • Currently, over 280 coffee roaster and importers from all over the country are licensed to sell Fair Trade Certified™ coffee. It is available in more than 20,000 retail locations across the US.
  • Fair Trade Certified™ coffee has been in Europe for about 14 years. Over 130 brands of Fair Trade Certified™ coffee are available in some 35,000 supermarkets.
  • In 2003, US sales of Fair Trade Certified™ coffee grew by 90 percent.
  • To date, Transfair USA has certified over 38 million pounds of Fair Trade coffee in the US, which has generated US $31 million of additional income for farmers.
  • Fair Trade Certified™ coffee imports to the US have almost doubled in the US each year since it was introduced in 1999.
  • Fair Trade consumer education campaigns have been conducted in New England, the San Francisco Bay area, Chicago, and Seattle.
  • Fair Trade and the plight of coffee farmers has received major press coverage including stories in Newsweek, USA Today, New York Times, Financial Times, San Francisco Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune, Seattle Post Intelligencer, Denver Post, Boston Globe, among others.
  • In September 2003, Procter & Gamble, one of the world's four largest coffee companies, announced that it would introduce Fair Trade Certified™ coffee products through it's specialty coffee division, Millstone.
