What Oxfam is Doing

Supporters of Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign strongly condemn the internationals trade system's rigged rules and double standards that have such damaging consequences for developing countries and small-scale farmers around the world. The US and the European Union are the biggest culprits in this egregious behavior.

Oxfam is working to change trade in agriculture by:

  • Ending agricultural export subsidies and supports, and the resulting cycle of over-production and export dumping by rich countries.
  • Eliminating conditions to International Monetary Fund/World Bank loans that force poor countries to open their markets to foreign goods, regardless of the impact on their people.
  • Establishing stable, higher prices for primary commodities and better pay for small farmers everywhere.
  • Creating a more democratic World Trade Organization that gives poor countries a stronger voice.
  • Developing national and regional trade policies that help poor people to access markets and benefit from trade.
  • Encouraging rich countries to remove barriers to imports from all poor countries.
