Founded in 1987 by peasants, community organizers, agricultural technicians, and university staff committed to development and environmental protection, GADEC focuses on poverty alleviation and the promotion of social justice in the Tambacounda region to promote sustainable community development. The organization works to provide quality literacy education and training to enhance community development, and creates a democratic space to enable local communities to gain control of decision-making on key issues that affect their development. GADEC also promotes women's participation in decision making and socio-economic development. GADEC's programs have raised the level of literacy, improved agricultural production, environmental protection, and management, and helped provide better infrastructure at the community level.

The Agency for the Development of Women and Children (ADWAC) is a young, dynamic local NGO, established by highly experienced Gambian development workers who had previously worked for Save The Children (USA). The local staff have extensive experience of working with communities in the NBD. ADWAC pursues a program of integrated rural development in order to bring about sustainable improvements in rural living conditions, with particular emphasis being placed upon the well being of women and children. The Agency is non profit-making, non-sectarian and secular.

Established in 1973, CODESRIA is a Pan-African NGO and coordinating body of African research institutes, social science faculties of African universities, and professional organizations. CODESRIA facilitates research, promotes research-based publishing, and creates multiple fora geared towards the exchange of views and information among African researchers. It challenges the fragmentation of research through the creation of thematic research networks that cut across linguistic and regional boundaries. CODESRIA seeks to develop the social sciences in Africa by mobilizing African social scientists to undertake fundamental as well as problem-oriented research.

FNPC, a member of the National Council for Consultation on Rural Issues (CNCR), was founded in June 1998. The federation has a membership of 45,000 people from 1,500 Cotton Producer Groups (CPG). The various CPGs are organized as Economic Interest Groups (EIG), and all of their members are professional cotton producers. FNPC seeks to build the skills of producers to enable them to improve the quantity and quality of production and to protect their interests.
