Oxfam applauds passage of Global Food Security Act

By

In reaction to Congress passing the Global Food Security Act, Oxfam America’s Senior Agriculture Policy Advisor, Eric Munoz made the following statement:

"Oxfam applauds today’s passage of the Global Food Security Act in the Senate which places strong, bipartisan Congressional support behind global efforts to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition around the world.

The Global Food Security Act builds on existing efforts to support agriculture development, ensuring that smallholder women farmers will have access to the resources they need to improve their productivity, generate economic opportunities and build resilience to climate change.

Current US efforts to cut hunger and poverty around the world, including the Feed the Future Initiative, supports tens of millions of small-scale food producers and works with partner countries to develop their agriculture sectors and break the injustices of extreme poverty. As we embark on efforts to achieve a vision of zero hunger and sustainable development for all, passage of the Global Food Security Act demonstrates American leadership to make these aspirations a reality."

Editor’s note: A companion bill in the House passed last week but will need to be reconciled before going to President Obama.

How will climate change affect agriculture?

Climate change is affecting agriculture, but we can reduce climate-warming emissions and help farmers adapt to ensure we have nutritious food in the future.
