Publication Summary

In 2005, the leaders of rich countries have the opportunity to lift millions of people out of poverty. At the G8 Summit, at the UN Special Session on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and at a ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), trade rules, aid, and the unsustainable debt of developing countries—issues critical to the future of the world's poorest people—will be up for discussion. But will world leaders deliver on their rhetoric? In 2000, rich countries made a commitment to play their part in ensuring that the MDGs are met—but their promises remain unfulfilled. Five years later, they should ensure that a new round of international summitry becomes a platform for action.
