Publication Summary

Trade and investment have great potential for creating sustainable development, reducing poverty and meeting basic rights – but they can also contribute to increasing poverty, and greater inequality.

Oxfam believes that these contradictions are a result of the unfair rules that govern trade and international investment, as well as the double standards by which rich countries and large companies define the global economy, to the detriment of poorer countries.

As part of its Make Trade Fair campaign, Oxfam is has released a report on the negative impacts the Free Trade Area of the Americans (FTAA) would have on sustainable livelihoods in the Americas. This report describes how the text on agriculture, investment, and intellectual property in the proposed FTAA draft would favor the interests of large corporations over the rights of people in the Americas. By focusing on these three particular areas, Oxfam hopes to complement analyses by a broad range of civil society organizations.
