A 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook the area around Indonesia's ancient royal city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java just before 6 a.m. on May 27, destroying many buildings in a heavily populated area.
Quake registered 6.3 on Richter scale at epicentre
Yogyakarta's population is more than 3 million
The epicentre of the quake was offshore, raising initial fears of a tsunami which did not materialize.
Yogyakarta, which is close to the active volcano of Merapi, is about 16 miles north of the Indian Ocean coast and 275 miles east of Jakarta.
