  • A 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook the area around Indonesia's ancient royal city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java just before 6 a.m. on May 27, destroying many buildings in a heavily populated area.
  • Quake registered 6.3 on Richter scale at epicentre
  • Yogyakarta's population is more than 3 million
  • The epicentre of the quake was offshore, raising initial fears of a tsunami which did not materialize.
  • Yogyakarta, which is close to the active volcano of Merapi, is about 16 miles north of the Indian Ocean coast and 275 miles east of Jakarta.
