Venue: Cleveland Cinematheque CRUDE, an independent film by Joe Berlinger, documents a landmark case in the Amazon jungles in Ecuador where indigenous communities are seeking redress from US oil giant Chevron for the alleged contamination of one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. Since it was founded in 1994, the Amazon Defense Front has been leading the law suit against ChevronTexaco for alleged environmental damages in the northeast Amazon region of Ecuador. Oxfam America has supported the Amazon Defense Front since its founding and provided grant funds to help it organize 100 communities affected by oil pollution. Oxfam America’s current Right to Know, Right to Decide campaign continues to advocate for the rights of poor communities around the world, who live in resource rich regions where oil, gas and mining projects impact their homes, livelihoods and environments.
