Background
In Senegal and Gambia, heavy seasonal floods have affected more than 180,000 people – damaging homes, reducing access to food and other necessities, and raising the risk of disease outbreaks.
Unusually heavy late-summer rains have drenched areas of Gambia and Senegal, leaving homes submerged for months in some cases, and exposing their residents to an array of health risks, from malaria to skin and respiratory diseases to diarrheal disease like cholera. Oxfam and our local partners will focus on removing water and waste from flooded neighborhoods, providing emergency supplies, and making cash distributions to help people whose incomes have been interrupted by the floods purchase what they need most.
