Background

Oxfam is helping people survive catastrophes like hurricanes and earthquakes, and the dangerous upheavals of war. Learn about Saving Lives 24/7.

When disaster strikes, there's no time to lose

Around the clock and around the world, Oxfam is poised to respond to emergencies. When a cyclone churns through Bangladesh, armed conflict forces hundreds of thousands to flee their homes in Darfur, or an earthquake flattens Port-au-Prince, Oxfam partners and staff on the ground immediately launch relief operations - delivering essentials before disease and exposure to the elements multiply the casualties.

Behind the scenes

Some of our most important work on emergencies happens when the world is looking the other way.

Oxfam is helping make disaster-affected communities less vulnerable to future emergencies. We are improving water sources in areas prone to devastating droughts; helping farmers store seeds and food to avert food shortages; and providing preparedness trainings to help communities take charge and save lives at times of emergency.

We are also providing aid in serious humanitarian disasters that never make headlines. The Saving Lives 24/7 Fund helps ensure that Oxfam can respond wherever and whenever the needs are greatest, without relying on the news media to generate public interest and support.

The Saving Lives 24/7 Fund will enable us to:

  • deploy staff immediately when an emergency strikes;
  • provide emergency water, sanitation, shelter materials, and other essentials;
  • help people affected by disasters restore their incomes;
  • and help communities located in dangerous places prepare for future emergencies.

Please help us act in time.
