When Cyclone Aila slammed into the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, it triggered floods and tidal waves that damaged embankments, inundated villages, and contaminated supplies of fresh water with salt. Millions of people have been affected by the disaster, which has destroyed homes and livestock and left many facing severe shortages of drinking water and other essentials.
Oxfam partners are working to reach survivors with emergency food, drinking water, shelter material, water filters, and rehydration salts, focusing on the areas hardest hit by the storm and floods. We are simultaneously carrying out an assessment to learn what more is needed to protect the health and well-being of those forced to flee their homes.
