Background

When Cyclone Sidr tore through southern Bangladesh on Nov. 15, 2007, powerful winds, rain, and storm surges wreaked enormous destruction on the coast. The storm left more than 3,000 people dead, destroyed or damaged 1.4 million houses, and affected more than eight million people in this low-lying country. Without a massive international response, Bangladesh will face its worst humanitarian crisis in decades.
