Enabling Content in a Folder

Each Folder is set so that only specific content types can be created within it. To add a different content type, you need to first edit the Folder to enable that type.

One very common question for people first learning to use the CMS is, "I want to add Content Type X in this folder, but it's not in the Add New Item menu! What do I do?"

This problem is actually (believe it or not) a feature - the system allows us to constrain the content types in each folder, so that only desirable types can be added there. The benefit of this is clear when you realize that there are actually some 50 or more possible content types, including many we never ever use, and it would be a huge pain to have to sort through all of them every time you want to make a new item.

If you want to add a content type that's not initially available in the Folder where you'd like to add it, you'll need to enable that content type first:

  1. Click the Contents tab to see the folder contents.
  2. Click the Edit tab. By first clicking Contents, then clicking Edit, you ensure that you're editing the actual Folder itself, and not the index page of the Folder.
  3. You are now on the Edit Folder screen. Halfway down this screen, there is a field called Set Allowed Types. One or more content types will already be highlighted.
  4. Select the type or types you'd like to enable in the Folder by holding down the Control key and clicking the names of the types you want. You should only use the content types the system is set up to handle (i.e. those listed here); otherwise they aren't going to work the way you'd expect.
  5. Hit the Save button. This will save your changes and take you back to the Contents listing, where you will be happy to note that your new content types appear in the Add New Item menu.
