UCLA Hosts Dodge Ball-a-thon "Tournament of Champions"

22 March 2005

The recent movie Dodge Ball may have brought the sport back into the national spotlight, but for UCLA's Students for Tsunami Relief, a coalition of campus organizations formed immediately following the disaster in southern Asia, dodge ball was the focal point for their fundraising efforts.

Thirty-four teams gathered at the John Wooden Center on February 4th to compete in a double-elimination tournament. All registration fees, ticket sales, and bottled water sales by H2O (Help 2 Others) were donated to Oxfam's tsunami relief efforts.

The co-ed teams, which came from fraternities, sororities, residence halls, and other campus and religious organizations, were encouraged to dress up for the event. One team, made up of cooks and chefs from the campus residence halls, competed in their full kitchen garb.

"Dodge ball is a great sport for this type of event because you don't have to be in extraordinary physical condition to play, "said Kenn Heller, Associate Director, UCLA Center for Student Programming, and member of the Old School Crushers dodge ball team. "I was excited by the diversity of people who participated."

The fundraiser brought in $5000 for Oxfam tsunami relief.
